Michael Johnstone - Founder of Johnstone Forensics

Michael S. Johnstone, AIA, is the founder of Johnstone Forensics. A forensic architect and golf course architect, he has provided expert witness services throughout the United States and Canada, earning particular recognition in the forensic investigation of golf course design and safety.
Michael has been a licensed architect since 1975 and a golf course architect since 1985, and over the course of his career has completed more than $200 million in construction. As an expert witness, he has investigated more than 320 cases coast to coast, spanning golf course design and safety — errant-ball incidents, golf cart rollovers, netting and barrier adequacy, and premises liability — as well as building design and construction defects. He is a licensed architect in North Carolina and California and routinely coordinates accident-reconstruction specialists, including biomedical, structural, mechanical, and traffic engineers.
His career began in the 1970s in city planning and design-build housing before he established his own practice, Michael S. Johnstone AIA, in 1982, offering full-service building and golf course architecture alongside forensic services. He studied golf course design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design under Robert Muir Graves and holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Cincinnati. He has authored and co-authored papers for the National Academy of Forensic Engineers, including work on the forensic investigation of golf course safety and the engineering analysis of golf course, cart, club, and ball incidents.
Today, as founder, Michael remains actively involved in casework while gradually transitioning the firm’s golf course design and safety practice to Bryan Bowers. The firm he built continues to deliver the independent, objective forensic analysis that established its reputation.
Zita Huetter - Owner and President

Annette Zita Huetter — known as Zita — is the owner and President of Johnstone Forensics. She is the rare operations leader equally at home in the fine detail complex cases demand and in the strategy that ties them together.
She brings more than fifteen years of operations and program leadership, built across the nonprofit and biomedical research sectors. For nearly a decade she served with the Health Research Alliance, a national network of biomedical research funders, rising to Director of Operations, where she led operational strategy, budgeting, governance support, national meetings, and data systems. In 2024 she founded AZH Expert Consulting, advising nonprofit and philanthropic organizations on operations, grant management, and governance. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, Chemistry and History from North Carolina State University and is bilingual in English and German.
Zita joined the practice three years ago to help run it, and her partnership with founder Michael Johnstone quickly became something more. She learned the work from the inside — what a forensic expert needs to do his best work, and how to carry the demanding load behind every case — and together they produced some of the most successful years of Michael's career. When he decided the firm should outlast him, he entrusted its ownership to her. Today she leads Johnstone Forensics' operations and case management, guiding each engagement from first contact through final report, and pairing analytical rigor with a gift for turning technical findings into clear, well-organized work that attorneys, insurers, and clients rely on.

Norman Herrmann - Water Feature and Aquatic Systems Expert

Norman R. Herrmann is a water feature forensic specialist with more than four decades of continuous, hands-on experience across the design, engineering, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of fountains and water features. Since 1982 he has worked on thousands of projects — from intimate residential fountains to large-scale civic and commercial installations — for clients including Simon Property Group, Ritz-Carlton Hotels, Watermark Communities, Toll Brothers, and the architecture firm Beyer Blinder Belle.
As principal of Liquid Studio in Etowah, North Carolina, Norman provides full-service water feature design and consulting: design development, 3D modeling, construction documents, mechanical and electrical plans, system engineering, and the specification of components, materials, finishes, and waterproofing for commercial fountains, interactive features, and play features. He conducts site inspections, coordinates construction, and handles system implementation and adjustment, along with specialized component and fixture design and testing. From 1982 to 2004 he served as Engineer and Project Manager at Hall Fountains, Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, where he managed the engineering department and oversaw installation, owner orientation, service, repair, and the fabrication of custom fountain components.
His portfolio includes the decorative water feature at Ruben Dario Park in Miami, the sculptural granite feature at the Old DC Courthouse Southeast Park in Washington, the flush-deck feature at Rosslyn Central Place in Arlington, the interactive playground feature at Branch Brook Park in Newark, and water features throughout the Bal Harbour hotel and condominium development north of Miami Beach.
For Johnstone Forensics, Norman applies that experience to disputes involving decorative fountains, architectural waterfalls, splash pads, interactive wet decks, reflecting pools, lake fountains, and related aquatic installations. His forensic work spans site inspection and condition documentation; review of construction documents, specifications, and shop drawings; assessment of hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical design and installation; evaluation of waterproofing, structural, and finish components; standard-of-care analysis for designers, contractors, and manufacturers; and causation analysis for leaks, failures, injuries, and property damage.
He prepares expert reports and provides deposition and trial testimony, coordinating with structural, mechanical, and electrical engineers as cases require.
He is based in Etowah, North Carolina.
